Welcome! Wikis are websites that everyone can build together. It's easy!

Where does the word 'Wiki' come from?

I was curious to find out about the origin of the word 'Wiki'. This is what I found:
The word was coined by Ward Cunnigham in 1995. He came upon this word on his first visit to Hawaii. An airport counter agent directed him to take the Wiki Wiki bus between terminals. In Hawaiian 'wiki wiki' meant quick and words are doubled for emphasis. He was to find the quick bus. This word from the Hawaiian language stuck out in M. Cunningham's mind and he chose to call the technology WikiWikiWeb. His first implementation of this technology was as a Unix progam and he chose to use the word in lower case as the progam name. The url for the technology can be found on the wiki page. From this page one can navigate via other links and find some useful and interesting information about wikis.
